Crawford Lake - new painting completed

I just finished the new larger version of "Crawford Lake". The subject is a lovely tree setting that I photographed last Fall with sunlight coming from behind it across the lake. Crawford Lake is a Halton Region Conservation area about 20 minutes from where I live.

This oil painting is done on Galley Canvas (2" thick) measuring 24" x 36". The original was done last year and measured 16" x 20". It was sold to a couple who love fairly close to Crawford Lake.

New August Painting - "Glimpse of the River" - large

I have just completed my latest painting called "Glimpse of the River" - large. It is a larger version of one i did in June by the same name. This piece is 24" x 36" and is done on gallery canvas. The scene is from upstate New York and was originally photographed a couple of years ago. This painting captures the scene as if one is just catching a glimpse of the river from the bank from a clearing.

The painting is for sale for approximately $580.00 unframed with shipping extra.

FASM at the Festival on Saturday in Milton

It was a great day at the 'FASM at the Festival' on Saturday (June 5) in Milton. The main street was closed off and festivitis took place from 8am to midnight.

FASM had a large tent with many artists displaying 2 or 3 of their works. Crowds were ever present and the traffic through the tent was steady throughout the day. There were no sales that I was aware of but the day was great exposure for the artists.

I was humbled to have received the "People's Choice Award". Members of the public were asked to vote for what they considered the best art(ist?) shwoing on the day. There were over 290 votes registered.

The "Island" is finished

My "Island" picture is now finished (except for drying and a spray coat of lacquer in a few weeks). I completed it today at the AM Gallery and am pleased with the reslts. It is the largest canvas that I have done so far. I like working on the large ones - more freedom of brush strokes!

Here it is.

"The Island" by Ian Ridpath - (c) May 2010

By the way, the June art showing at the AM Gallery starts on Thursday, June 3 and runs to the end of the month. There are several new artists showing this month. The Gallery is located in the Milton (Ontario) Mall.

Step 6 of my "Island" Painting - nearly done!

Here is a photo of step six of my "Island" painting. I have added the reflections on the water, highlighted and darkened the trees on the island and highlighted the birch trees on the far shore.

In case you are wondering how big the 30" x 36" painting really is, here is a photo of me working on it today (May 28).

Island Painting - Steps 2 and 3

Here are steps 2 and 3 of the painting. Step 2 shows the shorline defined and the roughed in tres on the smal islad. Step 3 further defined the far shoreline, added some detail to the sky and defined the island. The granite rocks were done using a palette knife to accent the smooth surfaces of the rocks.

New May Painting and 'Island' Painting Progress

Just completed another small painting called "Twin Birches". It is an oil on canvas 8" x 10" piece in the 'Group' style. I love using the small patches of paint to make a larger image.
Here is a photo of the piece.

"Twin Birches" -May 2010 by Ian Ridpath - 8" x 10" oil on canvas

I am also doing a large canvas as mentioned earlier and I am photographing the various stages. Here is a picture of stage 1 - laying down the backgrounds.

"Island" - May 2010 by Ian Ridpath - Step 1

I have laid down the sky and water backgrounds. The water colour is exaggerated and will be softened later on. The sjy is probably as it will be when the apinting is finished - I may add some more cloud detail.

The May AM Gallery is all set to open today

After scrambling a bit to get all the artists set up, the May AM Gallery in the Milton Mall is now set up and all set to open today (Thursday, May 6) at 10:00am. We have decided to change the opening times from Thursday evenings to Sunday afternoons to all day Thursday, Friday and Saturdays from 10:00am to 6:00pm.

There are several first-timers at this show and some seasoned artists showing for the first time. Come on out and see some great local art from oil paintings, acrylic paintings, glass works and more.

Since we are in our new, spacious location in the Mall, we can show more works from more artists and the public and artists seem to love the new location.

New Paintings for the May AM Gallery

I am working on 5 smaller pieces for the May AM Gallery. I thought it might be nice to offer some lower cost pieces along with my reqgular paintings.

I have also almost finished one larger 'cottage' piece that I will be showing in May as well. The new AM Gallery location is GREAT!

On my website, I have added a new page called "Commissions". It is at: http://www.ianridpath.ca/commissions.htm.

On it you will see my fee schedule for doing original oil paintings from photos.

At the Gallery today working

I am back to the AM Gallery today to do some work on my next two pieces. Hopefully I can get them finished this week. I always leave the screen that is across the opening of the Gallery open when I am working so that people strolling through the Milton Mall can drop in and ask about painting.

Today sure feels like the first day of Spring - I went for a two mile walk and had to carry my jacket on my shoulder.

Come on Summer!

Last of the New Paintings for February

I just completed the last three (of five) paintings for February. The two smaller ones of the local Milton Mill Pond are going into the Silent Auction on March 5th at the "From Heart to Hand" show at the Milton Sports Centre. Please go to my Facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ian-Ridpath-Oil-Painter-Web-Designer/203166411012 to get your free invitation. Look under the "Art Show, Sale and Auction" event.

The "Camping on the Lake" painting was inspired by times at camp grounds around Ontario in past years. I have tried to capture the giant-sky and the wonderful wooded shores along our lakes.

The two pictures of the Milton Pond are a set representing the pond from this past October and just this month. They are of the same shore line in both seasons.

Two new paintings for 2010

I have just completed the next two paintings for this month - I am hoping to do five and put three into the upcoming "From Heart to Hand" art show in March. It is sponsored by Arts Milton and takes place on Friday, march 5th ans Saturday March 6th. All are welcome!

One picture is of a high valley in Colorado that I saw during a three day trip there in October 2007. The valley was at about 6000' and we were close to 6500' at the boot camp that I was attending.

The second one is called "Winter Stand" and is a group of trees on the shore of a dark and cold lake.

Enjoy them and if you are interested in purchasing them, please contact me though my website at: http://www.home.cogeco.ca/~iridpath

January paintings - the beat goes on!

I started a new landscape oil painting this weekend as I am helping out at the AM Gallery at the Milton Mall this month. I hope to have it finished this coming week and will put it up here on line. Last week I did two small 'snowscapes' but wanted to get back and do some larger landscapes.

January (post Christmas rush) has been rather quiet at the Gallery and I was 'painted out' after doing 6 pieces in November/December. The gallery allowed my three panel spaces in the show this month in exchange for some extra 'staff' time. I combined this extra time with some time to start back painting.

For anyone who has not yet been at the AM Gallery in the Milton Mall - please do drop by and see some great original art by local artists.

I understand the Gallery will also be open next month (the sixth one) and they are looking for some new artists to show.

From 2009 to 2010 - all in the day in the life of a retiree

Probably everyone who blogs has their take on 2009 and the New Year 2010 that is upon us. I am no exception. Last night (New Year's Eve) my wife and I went out to dinner and then down to our church for a movie, food and fellowship and to bring in the New Year.

Because of  the big change in my life in August (I was let go by my employer after 21 years), I found myself a little at a loss of what to do with the rest of my life. And, although I trust I have much more life to live, life after a 42 year career in electronics is somthing I have been thinking about a lot.

I feel so blessed that at this time I am able to persue my oil painting and web designs and have shown locally at a few exhibits - with some success.

To that end I am really excited about the prospects of doing much more painting and designing and turning my 'hobby' into one small stream of income although that is not the prime objective at this time.

I have really been encourgaed from friends and family in both areas and want to make these activities a part of my 'retirement portfolio' - not a portfolio based soley on money but a portfolio of time, talent and treasure.

Some activities I will do will just be for fun and others for service to the church and community and some as a means of adding to the household 'coffers'.

I want to thank all who have encouraged me and wish everyone a blessed and prosperous New Year.
